Hype Continues for Release of Revised UK Ford Kuga
Ford Kuga 2012 Facelift

After it’s unveiling in late 2011 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, hype and anticipation is continuing ahead of the Ford Kuga SUV’s release, expected in summer 2012. Thanks to the company strategy “One Ford”, the Kuga is no longer a separate model and is now all-but identical to the North American Ford Escape, with just a few noticeable differences. After impressing at the LA show, the European Kuga will be unveiled at the auto show in Geneva in March where the changes to the grille and fog-lights will be apparent. Other differences between the two vehicles are found in the Kuga having more exterior chrome trim as-well as minor dashboard changes and different centre console design.

Based on Ford’s new family face, using the Vertrek’s narrow front grille and split lower intakes, the Kuga is treated to a new shape; the most apparent change from the current model comes as a result of a significant increase in the length. This gives the 2012 Kuga a new found practicality with an extra 600 litres of maximum load area, giving a total of 1,928 litres on the long wheel-base chassis. Doing this has allowed Ford to rival competitors in terms of size.

On the interior of the car, Ford have added numerous improvements to the cabin and dashboard, most of the new design is borrowed from the successful switchgear of the Focus and C-MAX, with added large touchscreen display on the centre console. Other technology borrowed from the Focus includes numerous of convenience of safety features. Arguably the most impressive of these is the hands-free boot opening. Drivers approaching the car with key-fob in pocket are simply able to wave a foot in kicking action under the rear bumper to open the boot, the perfect feature for those with hands full. Other optional extras will include blind-spot warnings and Active Park assist.

Curve Control set-up has been added to the new Kuga to improve and tighten the car’s line in a corner, this is part of Ford’s four-wheel-drive system which the company claim can monitor 25 different parameters, including, wheel speed and steering angles. This all helps the Kuga to perform to the highest of standards in wet and slippery conditions. A two-wheel-drive version will also be marketed.

The 2012 Kuga will be available in both petrol and diesel engines with a choice of 1.6 and 2.0 litre four cylinder units. To help with Ford’s commitment to lowering carbon emissions, stop-start technology has been included; this should provide up to 60 miles-per-gallon. This version of the Kuga will be fitted with a six-speed manual transmission gearbox as standard although the popular dual-clutch PowerShift box will be available as an optional extra. Future models are expected to be designed and marketed in electric and plug-in hybrid versions.

In terms of price, the new Kuga is expected to retail higher than previous models at around £22,500. This is not a significant increase and the technology and features certainly justify any slight incline in cost.
