17 Dec 2018
We've heard some unusual tips and tricks for de-icing our cars but which ones actually work? It seems to be the crazier the better, we have put together a small list for those times you've forgotten your debit card or kitchen spatula!
Save your Plastic bags!
Wrap your wing mirrors in plastic bags using rubber bands to secure them, this will stop your mirrors from freezing over and might spare you an extra 5 minutes the morning after!
Stock up on old socks
Put a pair of old socks on your windscreen wipers! It’s a known fact to raise your windscreen wipers before a cold night so they don’t stick to your screen, however, this tip is sometimes more damaging than not, did you know you can slide some old socks over the top of your wipers to prevent ice buildup!
Still under the umbrella of de-icing is foggy windows! Waiting for your windows to de-fog takes what feels like an eternity so to prevent the fog after the ice, place some socks filled with Silica Cat Litter in your vehicle, this will absorb the moisture!
Two in one, cat litter can also be used as a weight in the back of your car for those rear-wheel drivers out there, giving your wheels more traction to get going.
Making the most of what you have
Stuck in the snow? Car mats can be used to under your wheels to create traction, getting you out of the snow, of course, this won’t work if you’re snowed in but it might come in handy if it’s a little icy and your car is struggling to pull off!
The sun rises in the East!
The easiest tip really, if you park facing the sun-rise this will melt all the ice for you, problem solved!
