Ford and Dominos trial self-driving delivery vehicles
30 Aug 2017
Ford has revealed that it has been working in a partnership with the world’s leading pizza delivery company Dominos to launch the industry’s first self-delivery vehicles. Using a fleet of Ford Mondeo cars, the programme will look at customer interaction with self-driving cars as part of the food home delivery service.

Utilising Domino’s experience in delivery, Ford is looking to enhance the customer experience of its driverless vehicles. Ahead of the planned launch of self-driving vehicles in 2021, the trial in Ann Arbor will randomly select customers to participate in the scheme. With the ability to track delivery vehicles and unlock the food from the vehicles, the trail will see customer reaction to the self-driving vehicles
Speaking about the self-driving project, Patrick Doyle, Domino’s CEO commented “As delivery experts, we’ve been watching the development of self-driving vehicles with great interest as we believe transportation is undergoing fundamental, dramatic change”. He added “We pride ourselves on being technology leaders and are excited to help lead research into how self-driving vehicles may play a role in the future of pizza delivery. This is the first step in an ongoing process of testing that we plan to undertake with Ford.”
Using a driver and self-driver mode, the city of Ann Arbor has supported the programme, with the Mayor Christopher Taylor adding “While it’s pizza delivery today, my hope is that collaborations such as this will enable even more innovations tomorrow.”
