Since its withdrawal from the Supercars racing programme in 2015, Ford has only featured as a part of a licensing agreement. Developing a new two-door Mustang Supercar, Ford will have its participation reinforced through a technical alliance with DJR Team Peske and Tickford Racing. Looking since 2016 to replace the existing FG-X, the announcement clears issues surrounding IP permission and funding requirements.
Speaking about the introduction of the Mustang to the grid in 2019, Graeme Whickman, Ford Australia president and CEO said “We’re proud to announce that Ford Australia, with our Ford Performance global team, is working with DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing to homologate Mustang for 2019,” He went on to add “There’s been a lot of speculation and calls for Mustang to be on the track, and as a Ford Performance model that’s raced around the world, it’s fitting that Australia’s most popular sports car should be on our race tracks.”
Commenting on the introduction of its rival back on the grid, Kristian Aquilina, Holden Australia’s executive director of marketing commented: “It’s legendary rivalry on the racetrack, so bring it on”.
